Sessions Descriptions and Speakers

The Bob Love Story

Bob's presentations focus on the importance of dreams and how to hold on to them. He uses vivid examples from his won life story to teach audiences how they can overcome adversity and be motivated for success through his "Five Rules for The Game of Life."

Speaker:

Bob Love
Bob Love
Director of Community Relations
NBA Chicago Bulls

Growing up poor and one of 14 children in rural Louisiana, Bob Love had a dream to play in the NBA. Not able to afford a basketball, Bob nailed a coat hanger to the side of his grandmother's house and used his imagination.

Despite his great success as an athlete, Bob was not able to do something we all take for granted - speak without stuttering. As a child, he dreamed of speaking without a severe stutter; to overcome the long periods where he could not speak at all and not stumble over his words. Forty years later, Bob would realize his dream not only to speak clearly but to become a professional speaker.

As the greatest player ever to wear a Chicago Bulls uniform before Michael Jordan, Bob scored 12,263 points in his marvelous career. A three-time NBA All-Star who averaged 23 points per game over eight seasons, Bob had his jersey retired by the Bulls on January 14, 1994.

The Upside and Downside of the Mortgage Meltdown

In simple terms, the mortgage meltdown of late 2007 and early 2008 can be blamed on excessive greed. But this explanation may be too simple. In particular, other precipitating causes for the meltdown have been suggested, some causes obvious and others more obscure. This presentation will sort through the various aspects of yet one more financial disaster to be endured and overcome, and will target the good and the bad, especially the heroes and the villains. While much of this is both fascinating and discouraging at the same time, the goal at this point, and the goal of the presentation, is to learn as much as possible regarding what went wrong in order to prevent a similar meltdown from occurring again any time soon. As will be emphasized in the presentation, accountants have a major role to play in improving the mortgage process.

Ethics

Ethics lapses are rarely committed by someone who wakes up one morning and says, "Today, I think I will break the law and cause the demise of my employers." On the contrary, it occurs one small step at a time, until it cannot be undone without significant adverse repercussions. Yet, many discussions and presentations about ethics focus on rules, regulations and legal interpretations. Wayne's approach is far more organic, focusing on the individual, the environment, the law and their interrelationship.

Safeguarding Your 401(K) Investments

Regulatory and Legislative Initiatives Regarding 401k Fee Disclosure and the Status of High Profile 401k Fiduciary Breach Litigation

Recent legislative and regulatory initiatives have increased the focus on 401k plan fees, disclosures to employees, and liability for investment selections/oversight. As the new rules and laws go into effect, many plan sponsors will find themselves in an uncomfortable position: having to disclose fees that are too high and investment oversight that is insufficient. This course outlines the most significant components of these issues and steps that might be taken now to avoid difficulties after the regulations take effect. The course will also include a brief status report on current high-profile fiduciary breach litigation including the DOL's amicus brief filed in support of the plaintiffs that are suing the John Deere/Fidelity fiduciaries.
